Yellow Corn Shalako Kachina Doll NavajoBeautiful! You will love to have this adorn your home!
This sculpture is some amazing work! This impressive Shalako Kachina Doll was hand carved by Bertha Lopez and Eloise Jones, master Navajo Kachina carvers from Ganado, AZ. Hand made from a nice piece of genuine cottonwood root, a real one of a kind. This Shalako has a graceful bend with a quiet balance. The Navajo artists use the natural shape of the root to form the body and have painted it with traditional designs, giving the sense of a brilliant cloak. The bright colors convey the power and beauty of the spirit kachinas. This Shalako Kachina Doll is 21-1/4" tall (including the wooden base), and about 2-1/4" wide. Signed by the Native American artist Bertha Lopez, includes census number and labeled Yellow Corn. The Hopi Shalako towers seven or eight feet in the air, a long, shoulder-less figure that bows and dips as he moves in a most graceful manner. The Hopi Shalako ceremony is held infrequently. The basic intent is probably that of bringing the cloud supernaturals to the Hopi mesa and causing them to remain in the general vicinity of the villages and fields of the tribal lands.
